NP or CP? And why? How are these to own, work on, get parts for etc? Because it’s seeming NP to me.

Kinja'd!!!

Like how is that even an engine?

Had a 2010 T5 AWD R-Design. One nice ride for sure. That price is about right; the S40s took a nasty drop in value for no discernable reason about a year ago.

Most parts have Ford-brand alternates (it’s a Euro MK2 Focus after all); that’s your route for cheap parts

NP, even with the high mileage.

The V50 I had was one of the most reliable cars I’ve ever owned. Add some power and better seats in the T5, and I might have been more interested in keeping it.

I circled the engine for you

If it passes an independent inspection, I think this is an excellent choice.

Timing belt interval on these is (probably) 120,000 miles ; so either the belt has just been replaced, or it is 10,000 miles overdue.

I had a 2005 non-turbo for a few years. It was a great car in a lot of ways. Very reliable but I had it from ~100k miles and sold it with like ~130k so cant really speak to high-mile durability. Handling is solid, I can imagine with AWD and more horsepower it would be pretty fun! The few minor things I had to do under the hood weren’t bad and I never had an issue finding parts, but also never did major work.

Biggest plus is the seats, true to Volvo form they are heavenly.

Also, thanks for the huge wave of nostalgia that’s what I drove through high school, lots of good memories in that car.

Great cars. Same platform as the first-gen Mazda3 and 2nd-gen Focus. Safe, great seats, good power.

The headlights do get foggy, and the infotainment system looks great but is slightly outdated.

Seems reasonable. High miles, but excellent looking exterior. I’d be a little worried about the interior both with those miles and with the lack of photos. The P1 platform is pretty bulletproof, same as my 2013 C30, and the engine is also pretty great (also same as my C30). If you do buy it, you can do a modest tune to get pretty decent power boost at no consequence to the engine/ transmission.

Over 20,000 miles per year. As long as they were good about maintenance, I think you should be alright. But definitely have a mechanic with Volvo experience give it a good once-over.

If they have no record of when the timing belt was last changed then get a price allowance for a belt replacement. Forget trying to DIY - it is a real pain unless you are experienced at it. Before you buy the car get a computer diagnostic test run on it. Get a VADIS / OB2 cable / software for the car, so you can read the faults yourself. BE CAREFUL if you have to jump start the car - the main computer can be wiped and the car becomes useless because Volvo has a security system from hell and a wiped main computer means a no start then $1500 to Volvo to get it going again. A lot of the drivetrain parts are shared with the 60 and 80 series. Change the oil and transmission fluid, and you will have a great car.

Is the engine as hard to work on as it looks? Because it looks more like a disassembled IKEA desk inside of a box than an engine.

That’s not an engine, that’s disassembled IKEA furniture...

Having bought a 2006 S60 to replace my 2003 S40, I’m pretty sure I would have been happier with an S40 T5. The S60 isn’t super slow or anything, but it’s just too big and heavy compared to the first-gen S40. Unfortunately the T5 S40's don’t seem to be common here, and the few I did see had horrible mods.
